Old and narrow streets are the very heart of the village: the main of them is called "Guidobaldo Del Monte" and it runs from "Porta Maggiore" to "Barocci Square".
This is the only square of the village, where you can find two churches: in one of them is situated the "Museo Arte Sacra" while in the town hall there is the "Museo Di Civiltà Contadine" located in some of the big underground passages.

HISTORY OF MOMBAROCCIO

The name Mombaroccio comes from MONTE-BIROCCIO; Monte because the village is on a hill, Biroccio because this was the most ordinary mean of conveyance used in that time.
Mombaroccio is a fortress and its origin dates back to the XIII Century. The village
is surrounded by medioeval walls and doors. The main door -called Porta Maggiore- is betwen the two fifteenth - century towers, and the exit door is called Porta Marina
(because it strikes on the sea).
The village was surrounded with walls as a fortress to defend itself from the enemy attack during the medioeval war. In the time there was a draw-bridge too, and the two loop-holes on the towers were guard posts from where the guards had to control
the surroundings.

During the night the two doors were closed, in order to preserve the village and the people from danger. The most famous Families that dominate the village in different times were the Malatesta, the Sforza, Del Monte, the Boni, the Guidi, and the Masini.
